My mom has been addicted to travel her whole life. From 1983-85, she traveled solo around the world on a shoestring budget, working along the way. In 1988 she took a leave of absence from her job to spend three months in South America. She always carried a 35mm camera, shooting predominantly slides. Although photography was never more than a peripheral interest, and my mom had to limit the number of photos she took due to the cost, she captured some amazing photographs. One of my projects during the pandemic has been to digitize these photos in high quality and organize them into a photographic essay. These photos are my hand-picked favorites, with stories and descriptions provided by my mom.

Herr Blender was a Meister Konditor and his cakes, pastries, breads, and chocolates were outstanding. Their quality became my benchmark as I traveled the globe. It was rare to find goods that could compete with those of Cafe Blender.

Even though I had limited sailing experience, I thought it would be fun to help crew a ship. Lo and behold, I managed to find Colin and Lorne, who took me onto their small ketch for over two weeks as they sailed from Gibraltar to Ibiza. I took watch at night, when I kept an eye out for cargo ships.

People said that getting a job at McGraw was impossible if you weren’t from a military family; I proved them wrong. I got my foot in the door by waitressing one night a week, and then eventually I was able to get a full-time job as a statistician. Working for the U.S. government helped my savings a great deal. I was earning dollars, which were strong against the Deutsche Mark at that time.

Linda and I were on our way to Nepal when Indira Gandhi was assassinated. We were happy to have avoided the chaos in India, but even places in Nepal were temporarily shut down. We had to wait an extra day or two before we could get our trekking permits.

Traveling before the Internet meant that we were often uninformed about local events. During my time in Peru, the Shining Path was conducting its guerrilla war around the country and had recently derailed a train outside of Cuzco. I guess ignorance is bliss.

Our hiking group consisted of anyone who had jumped off the local train at the trail head. We stayed together for the entire four-day trek, which improved our safety. Due to the nearby guerrilla activity, there were hardly any visitors to the trail or Machu Picchu. We could camp anywhere we wanted.
